The vital need for wisdom

Living in this challenging world, we recognise the vital need for wisdom. Navigating the difficulties and problems we face is not easy. The author of Proverbs sought to emphasise the need for wisdom and how it can help us deal with the various issues of life and ministry. The importance of wisdom is emphasised as we consider the things associated with it. Wisdom is never given just by itself. There will come attendant things that are closely associated with it.

Wisdom and prudence

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge and discretion.” (Proverbs 8:12)

  1. Wherever wisdom stands, prudence will also be present with it.
  2. Solomon recognised that those who are simple should seek to be prudent (Proverbs 1:4; 8:5).
  3. Prudence helps us to make good decisions in life.
  4. We would be able to grow in knowledge and discretion…to be significantly wiser.

The fear of the Lord

“The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.” (Proverbs 8:13)

  1. Another thing associated with wisdom is the fear of the Lord.
  2. Solomon wrote that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7).
  3. This is the kind of knowledge that we would want to obtain.
  4. An expression of the fear of the Lord is seen in what wisdom hates.
    1. She hates all kinds of evil, such as pride and arrogance.
    2. She also hates all evil ways, such as speaking perverse words.
  5. If we have the fear of the Lord, we would hate all these evil things.

Other things associated with wisdom

“Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength.” (Proverbs 8:14)

What are some other things associated with wisdom?

  1. Counsel…Wisdom can result in wise counsel to those who need it.
  2. Sound wisdom…It can also provide sound reasoning to guide us.
  3. Understanding…As instruction is received, there will come a greater understanding.
  4. Strength…Another thing associated with wisdom is strength. In receiving wise counsel, sound wisdom and deeper understanding, we will find the strength to face the challenges of life.

Leaders need wisdom

“By me kings reign, and rulers decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, all the judges of the earth.” (Proverbs 8:15)

The leaders of a nation should recognise their vital need for wisdom in their tenure. The king is the supreme leader of the nation. The rulers help govern by making decrees to ensure justice. They may not be part of the royal family, such as Joseph and Daniel. The princes are part of the royal family and the nobles are in high positions. Judges help deal with matters of the law. All leaders would need wisdom to fulfil their roles. For Singapore, we have a new government in place, and they will need wisdom and prudence to lead our country. Let us pray for wisdom to be given to our leaders as they govern us for the future of Singapore. Let us continue to grow in wisdom, prudence and the fear of the Lord as we face the challenges of life and ministry.
