A Poor Appreciation of Jesus Prophesied

Text: Isaiah 53

1. Despised and rejected by men          Isaiah 53:3a

2. Many hid their faces from Him          Isaiah 53:3b

a) The disciples fled from Jesus when He was captured          Matthew 26:56

b) Peter denied the Lord Jesus          Matthew 26:70, 72, 74

3. He was despised and we did not esteem Him          Isaiah 53:3c

a) None spoke up for Jesus when He was tried

i) By the Sanhedrin Council

ii) By Pilate

b) No one esteemed Him

i) Not the soldiers

ii) Not the Jews

iii) Not the multitudes

4. He was esteemed wrongly

a) As One smitten by God

b) As One afflicted by God          Matthew 27:39-44

NEVERTHELESS CHRIST’S SUFFERING WAS NOT WITHOUT MEANING

1. He has borne our griefs          Isaiah 53:4a

2. He has carried our sorrows          Isaiah 53:4b

3. Jesus suffered vicariously (that is, on our behalf)!
