THE ROAD TO EMMAUS

THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

The Risen Saviour had shown Himself alive and well on a number of occasions to the following:

  1. Mary Magdalene at the Garden Tomb     John 20
  1. The Disciples behind locked doors     John 20
  1. Thomas who doubted at first     John 20

Nevertheless, there were disciples who were still in doubt and not convinced that the Lord Jesus had indeed risen from the dead.

TWO DISCIPLES OF THE LORD JESUS

Luke 24 records the story of two Disciples who had left Jerusalem on the Road to Emmaus. This village was about 11.2km from Jerusalem.

  1. One of the Disciples was called Cleopas     Luke 24:18
  1. The Lord Jesus appeared to them but their eyes did not recognise Him
  1. They were discussing the events of the week

19 And He said to them, “What things?” So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22 Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. 23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”      Luke 24:19-24

MORE THAN FACTS ARE NEEDED

What the Two Disciples had were plenty of Facts. They spoke of the Lord Jesus as a mighty prophet, but He was condemned to death and crucified. The Resurrection of the Lord Jesus was also related.

What was missing was Faith!

25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.     Luke 24:25-27

1. Slow of heart to believe

a) This was the problem that hindered Faith

b) A solution must be found

2. The Scriptures expounded

a) The Lord Jesus patiently expounded the Scriptures

b) Faith grew apace as understanding deepened

Let us seek to cultivate a deeper Faith in the Lord. Much depends on our growth in knowing the Scriptures better!
