THE JOURNEY OF THE PSALMIST

The Psalmist had come some ways from his starting point. A quick review may be enlightening.

  1. Confession of Ignorance of God’s word     Psalm 119:1-8
  1. Cleansing sought from the LORD     Psalm 119:9-16
  1. Committed to serving God     Psalm 119:17-24
  1. Concerned about a flagging spirit needing revival     Psalm 119:25-32

HAVE YOU EVER MADE THIS PRAYER?

The Psalmist went on to make a startling prayer to the LORD.

35 Make me walk in the path of Your commandments,

For I delight in it.

36 Incline my heart to Your testimonies,

And not to covetousness.

37 Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things,

And revive me in Your way.     Psalm 119:35-37

  1. Make me walk in the path of Your commandments

a) The Psalmist asked the LORD to make him do this

b) He is placing himself under the clear command of God

  1. Incline my heart

a) He wants God to make him incline his heart to the Word of God

b) He realises that the struggle against covetousness is tough

  1. Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things

a) He recognised that he was easily distracted

b) He wants God to have full charge of his life

ANALYSIS OF THIS PRAYER

Let us ponder the analysis of this heartfelt prayer of the Psalmist!

  1. He recognised that on his own, he would not succeed
  1. He turned to God and surrendered everything to Him

a) God will incline his heart and eyes

b) He will respond as God “makes him” do the right things

This is a challenging prayer to make. It is truly a good and wise one to make! Our sinful inclinations are too strong to overcome by ourselves!
