THE THINGS THAT DISTRACT
There are many things in the world that will distract us from seeking the face of the Lord. The Psalmist noted one thing in particular
Incline my heart to your testimonies,
And not to covetousness.
Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things,
And revive me in the way. Psalm 119:36-37
- Covetousness
a. Money
b. Fame
c. Power
- Worthless things
a. The above may seem important
b. But at the end of the day they are truly “worthless things”
c. They have no eternal value at all
THE THING THAT SHOULD ATTRACT OUR ATTENTION
What are some of the things that should draw our attention? The Psalmist highlighted just one thing… God’s “testimonies!” This is a reference to the Word of God. There are several synonyms used in Psalm 119 that are used interchangeably.
- Law
- Statutes
- Word (or “word of truth”)
- Commandments
- Ordinances
- Judgments
A PRAYER FOR REVIVAL
The Psalmist noted that as he was drawn to covetousness, he would be spiritually affected adversely. He knew that he needed to pray that God would “revive” him.
- May we find revival
a. In our heart
b. In our mind
c. In our spirit
- May we stay revived
a. Putting away covetousness
b. Pursuing knowledge of the Word of truth
