Day 47

"Who has despised the day of small things?"

Text: Zechariah 4:10

THE DAY OF SMALL THINGS

The phrase “small things” is a reference to the humble beginning of the returning remnant to Judah after 70 years in exile.

1. The building of the cities of Judah in the days of Ezra.

2. The building of the Wall of Jerusalem in the days of Nehemiah.

3. The building of the Temple in the days of Zerubbabel.

The efforts the returning remnants made were scorned by their enemies.

A SPECIAL WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT

A wonderfully uplifting word came from the Lord to Zechariah to be given to the people.

“For who has despised the day of small things?
For these seven rejoice to see
The plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.
They are the eyes of the LORD,
Which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.”
Zechariah 4:10

1. “Who has despised the day of small things”

a) The LORD is aware of the nasty and scornful remarks made by enemies.
b) The remnant need not be perturbed by these snide and senseless words.

2. “The eyes of the LORD”

a) They are symbolized by the seven eyes (Zechariah 3:9; 4:10).
b) They scan the entire earth. The eyes of the LORD rejoice in what they foresee!

3. “The plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel”

a) Zerubbabel had a measuring instrument in his hand.
b) He was like a surveyor studying the lie of the land.
c) He would be the governor who would successfully rebuild:
i) The cities of Judah
ii) The Second Temple
