Day 144

"The LORD shall be King over all the earth"

Text: Zechariah 14:8

ESTABLISHING THE KINGDOM OF GOD

The idea of a kingdom was never fully comprehended or practised. No earthly kingdom ever came close to what God had in mind. While the Lord Jesus proclaimed and expounded on the concept of a spiritual and eternal kingdom, there was more to be revealed.

“And in that day it shall be
That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem,
Half of them toward the eastern sea
And half of them toward the western sea;
In both summer and winter it shall occur.
And the LORD shall be King over all the earth.
In that day it shall be—
‘The LORD is one,’
And His name one.”
Zechariah 14:8-9

1. Jerusalem

a) It would be the new capital.
b) Living waters
This would be a new feature, for Jerusalem does not have such rivers.
i) “The eastern sea”
This is a reference to the Dead Sea. It would no longer be dead.
ii) “The western sea”
This is a reference to the Mediterranean Sea.
iii) The living waters would provide water throughout the year
(in both summer and winter).

2. Established as King

a) The LORD shall be King.
b) His reign would be over all the earth.
c) The LORD is one.
There will be no rival king of any note.
d) His name is one.

We are reminded of the “Shema” that the faithful of Israel would utter every day
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!” (Deuteronomy 6:4)
