"There were four horns"

Text: Zechariah 1:18

THE SECOND VISION

The second vision that Zechariah saw was just as intriguing.

“Then I raised my eyes and looked, and there were four horns.
And I said to the angel who talked with me, ‘What are these?’
So he answered me, ‘These are the horns that have scattered
Judah, Israel and Jerusalem.'”
Zechariah 1:18-19

1. “Then I raised my eyes and looked, and there were four horns”

a) Zechariah raised his eyes to see the next vision.
b) It was a vision of four horns.

2. The imagery of “horns”

a) Some animals have horns.
b) The horns were used for both defense and attack.
c) “Horns” became a symbol of strength and power in the Biblical imagery.

3. “And I said to the angel who talked with me, ‘What are these?'”

a) Once again, Zechariah asked humbly for an explanation from the guiding angel.
b) He did not assume knowledge. In this regard, he showed much wisdom.

4. “So he answered me”

a) Patiently, the angel answered Zechariah.
b) He knew that Zechariah was expressing sincerity in his desire to understand visions.

5. “These are the horns that have scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem”

a) Powerful were the horns that had scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem.
b) Israel was scattered abroad by the Assyrian Empire.
c) Judah and Jerusalem were scattered by the Babylonian Empire.
d) The Medo-Persian Empire that had affected the Lord’s people.
