"A pattern of good works..."

Text: Titus 2:7

BEING AN EXAMPLE

The apostle Paul exemplified what he wrote in this word to Titus. The emphasis is full of practical wisdom.

“In all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works;
in doctrine, showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility.”
Titus 2:7

1. “In all things”

a) This is quite a challenge.
b) Titus would have to exercise himself diligently in order to fulfil this challenge.

2. “Showing yourself to be a pattern”

a) Teaching is one thing.
b) Being a pattern is quite another.
c) Of the two the latter is certainly more challenging.

3. A short list of things highlighted

a) “Of good works”
i) It is easy to teach people to do good works.
ii) It is important to teach by example.
b) “In doctrine”
i) There is particular attention paid to “doctrine”.
ii) Three things were closely associated with “doctrine”.
c) Three features:-
i) In doctrine- integrity.
ii) There must be no compromise.
iii) Integrity must be upheld even if certain doctrines are not easy to accept or practise.
d) “In doctrine…reverence”
i) This is an important word to bear in mind.
ii) Dignity must be upheld carefully.
e) “In doctrine…incorruptibility”
i) The doctrines of God cannot be corrupted.
ii) The servant of God must be incorruptible in his teaching of the word of God.
