"That they admonish the young women..."

Text: Titus 2:4

A SPECIAL MINISTRY OF THE OLDER WOMEN

Paul served the Lord Jesus as an apostle. Titus served as a pastor-teacher together with the Apostle Paul. There were others who served faithfully too. These served in what we may term “the full-time ministry”.

But there were others who served the Lord in other capacities. Paul highlighted to Titus how he could encourage the older women to minister to the younger women.

“That they admonish the younger women to love their husbands,
to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good,
obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be
blasphemed.”
Titus 2:4-5

1. “That they admonish the younger women”

a) The area of ministry is specified.
It is a special ministry to younger women.
b) The manner of ministry was always suggested strongly.
The older women are to wisely advise the younger women.

2. A short list of things to teach

a) “To love their husbands”
Not all know how to appreciate their husbands, let alone love them. They need to be admonished.
b) “To love their children”
Love of one’s offspring ought to be natural. Instruction and inspiration will go a long way to enhance.
c) “To be discreet”
This is a reference to “self-control”.
d) “Chaste”
This is a reference to “purity”.
e) “Homemakers”
This is a role that must be learned well. Having a house and making a home are not the same. The latter is advised.
f) “Good”
This is a straightforward word that needs no further comment.
g) “Obedient to their own husbands”
i) Submission to the leadership of the husband is in mind.
ii) The challenge is for the man of the house to lead the household well.

3. “That the word of God may not be blasphemed”

a) These are the teachings derived from the Word of God.
b) If these teachings are set aside then the word of God may be blasphemed!
