"We are debtors..."

Text: Romans 8:12

THE CONCEPT OF INDEBTEDNESS

The apostle Paul boldly and firmly declared how he saw himself as one indebted to God.

“I am a debtor both to Greek and barbarians,
both to wise and to unwise.”
Romans 1:14

In the following text he explains just why all believers should feel the same sense of indebtedness to God.

“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors not to the flesh-
not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh,
For if you live according to the flesh you will die;
but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body,
you will live.”
Romans 8:12-13

WE ARE NOT DEBTORS TO THE FLESH

This must be declared up front, bold and clear!

1. What is indebtedness to the flesh?

a) It is living “according to the flesh”.
b) There is no compulsion of any kind to live according to the dictates of the flesh,

2. What if we were to live according to the flesh?

a) We will end up with carnality.
b) We will become slaves to sin.
c) We will be at enmity with God.
d) We will be alienated from God.
e) We will perish ultimately.

WE ARE DEBTORS TO GOD

1. He has given us new and eternal life in Christ through the Holy Spirit.

2. Through the Spirit of God we can put the deeds of the body to death.

3. We are indebted to God to live a Spirit-filled life.
