"The God of patience and comfort..."

Text: Romans 15:5

A DISTINCT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GOD AND THE SCRIPTURES

What is the relationship between God and the Scriptures? The following text reveals a very striking relationship between God and the Scriptures.

“For whatever things were written before were written
for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort
of the Scriptures might have hope.
Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be
like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus.”
Romans 15:4-5

1. Two corresponding features highlighted

The apostle, with careful deliberation highlighted two features:-

a) The Scriptures
i) Patience of the Scriptures
ii) Comfort of the Scriptures
b) The Lord God
i) God of patience
ii) God of comfort

2. The significance of highlighting the relationship between God and the Scriptures:-

a) With reference to God
i) God possesses certain definite attributes.
ii) Two of His many attributes are highlighted here in this text.
b) With reference to the Scriptures
i) The Scriptures possess the ramifications of Divine attributes.
ii) When the Scriptures are read prayerfully, they will produce “patience and comfort” in the heart of the reader.
