"God gave them over to a debased mind..."

Text: Romans 1:28

A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS

One of the saddest words to read may be found in the phrase, “God gave them up”. The following text is the third time this idea is expressed (The phrase may be slightly different in the NKJV text, but the phrase in the Greek text is exactly the same).

“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge,
God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which
are not fitting…”
Romans 1:28

1. Expressions of man rejecting God

The following expressions describe this solemn reality. Five may be highlighted:-

a) “Suppress the truth in unrighteousness”. (Romans 1:18)
b) “Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful”. (Romans 1:21)
c) “And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man”. (Romans 1:23)
d) “Exchanged the truth of God for the lie…” (Romans 1:25)
e) “Worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator…” (Romans 1:25)

2. Consequences of this rejection of God

What are some consequences of this foolish rejection of God? Let us solemnly ponder the following statements.

a) “Became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened…”(Romans 1:21)
b) “Professing to be wise, they became fools…” (Romans 1:22)
c) “The wrath of God is revealed from heaven…” (Romans 1:18)
d) “God gave them up…” (Romans 1: 24, 26, 28)
i) To uncleanness (Romans 1:24)
ii) To vile passions (Romans 1:26)
iii) To a debased mind (Romans 1:28)
