"A star fallen from heaven to the earth"

Text: Revelation 9:1

THE FIFTH TRUMPET

The Fifth Trumpet heralded even worse woes that would befall the earth. The Lord now allows powerful evil spirits to afflict mankind.

“Then the fifth angel sounded:
And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth.
To him was given the key to the bottomless pit.
And he opened the bottomless pit,
and smoke arose out of the pit
like the smoke of a great furnace.
So the sun and the air were darkened
because of the smoke of the pit.”
Revelation 9:1-2

1. A complex sign.

a) This sign is not an easy one to decipher.

b) The text has to be carefully examined.

2. The significance of “stars” in heaven.

a) The sun, moon and stars were created on the 4th day (Genesis 1:14-19).

b) They were created to give light.

c) They were also created as signs.

3. A special reference to angelic beings.

a) God described angels as “sons of God” (Job 38:7).

b) The “sons of God” were a reference to angelic beings (Job 1:6).

4. A special “star” fell from heaven to earth.

a) This was an angelic being.

b) He was given “the key to the bottomless pit”.

5. The bottomless pit described.

a) It was compared to a great furnace.

b) A huge amount of smoke arose from this pit.

6. The sun and the air.

a) They were affected adversely.

b) They were darkened by the billows of smoke that came from the pit.

c) This pit is the abode of demons!

d) These demons have been locked up until they are released.
