"The first angel sounded"

Text: Revelation 8:7

THE SOUNDING OF THE SEVEN TRUMPETS

Revelation 8 and 9 form the contents of what would happen as the 7th Seal is opened. The Lord revealed to John divine judgment that would come upon a wicked world.

“The first angel sounded:
And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood,
and they were thrown to the earth.
And a third of the trees were burned up,
and all green grass was burned up.
Then the second angel sounded:
And something like a great mountain
burning with fire was thrown into the sea,
and a third of the sea became blood.
And a third of the living creatures in the sea died,
and a third of the ships were destroyed.”
Revelation 8:7-9

1. The First Trumpet

a) An angel of the Lord sounded the first trumpet.

b) These are divine judgments:

i) We are reminded of the 10 Plagues recorded in Exodus 7-12.

ii) We are also reminded of the Lord’s warning in the end times (Matthew 24).

c) These are not mere natural disasters.

d) The consequences of this Judgment of Hail and Fire.

i) This judgment affected the trees and the green grass.

ii) Inevitably, this would result in the “mingling of blood”.

iii) Many would perish because of the hail and fire.

2. The Second Trumpet

a) “Something like a great mountain burning with fire” occurred.

b) This is not a reference to any existing mountain on earth.

c) This could be a reference to a gigantic meteor that strikes the earth.

d) This was thrown into the sea.

i) We are not able to discern which “sea” this is.

ii) The major sea mentioned in the Scriptures was the Mediterranean Sea.

e) The mountain-like object was burning with fire hurtling to the earth.

i) One third of the living creatures died.

ii) One third of the ships were destroyed.

f) The sea became blood.

i) Many sea creatures would perish.

ii) The ships in the Sea would be affected.

iii) The seamen would perish.

iv) Hence the “sea would become blood”.
