"Clothed in white garments"

Text: Revelation 3:5

THE OVERCOMER

Is it possible to overcome tribulation? Yes! Is it possible to overcome not trials or tribulation but greed and avarice? The answer is also Yes!

“He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments,
and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life;
but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Revelation 3:5-6

1. “He who overcomes”

a) The Lord holds this out as something possible to do.

b) But much depends on the individual’s choice of what he desires.

i) If he desires a worldly life, he will not be an overcomer.

ii) If he chooses to heed the Lord and obey His word, he will overcome.

2. Blessings to the overcomer.

a) He will be clothed in white garments:

i) As a symbol of purity.

ii) As one who has gained victory.

iii) As one who has walked worthily of his calling from God.

b) Name in the Book of life.

i) His name in the Book of Life is assured.

ii) His name would not be blotted out.

iii) This is a wonderful assurance.

c) Confession by the Lord Jesus.

i) This is the Lord’s special word of commendation to God the Father.

ii) The name of the overcomer would be announced to God and His angels.

iii) This is a very special honour given by the Lord Jesus to the overcomer.

3. Hearing the Holy Spirit.

a) The Spirit of God was speaking to the Church at Sardis.

b) He also spoke to all the churches that were reading this word that was making its circuit to the other churches.

c) This word is not confined to the seven churches of Asia Minor.

d) It is a word that speaks to us today as well. May we desire to be overcomers!
