"If anyone adds to these things"

Text: Revelation 22:18

A SERIOUS WORD OF WARNING

As the Book of Revelation comes to a close, the Lord Jesus warns all who hear the words of this prophecy. The human tendency to add or to subtract is a very real problem. We must give heed to this solemn word of warning!

“For I testify to everyone who hears
the words of the prophecy of this book:
If anyone adds to these things,
God will add to him the plagues
that are written in this book;
and if anyone takes away
from the words of the book of this prophecy,
God shall take away his part from the Book of Life,
from the holy city,
and from the things which are written in this book.”
Revelation 22:18-19

1. An old word of warning.

This word of warning echoes what Moses wrote in Deuteronomy.

“You shall not add to the word which I command you,
nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments
of the Lord your God which I command you.”
Deuteronomy 4:2

2. A strong word of warning from the Lord Jesus.

a) The Book of Revelation was meant to be read to the church.

b) To all hearers this word of warning was given:

i) If a person adds to what the Lord has said, God will plague him.

ii) If a person subtracts from the Book of Revelation, God will take away his part from the Book of life.

iii) God will take away his access to the Holy City.

iv) And from the blessings that are stated in this Book.

3. Why would people wish to add or subtract anything from the Scriptures?

a) Foolishness mistaken for wisdom.

b) Arrogance of heart and mind.

c) Spiritual blindness.

4. Appropriate response.

a) The fear of the Lord to rule in our hearts.

b) The Spirit of wisdom and revelation to give us a heart of understanding.

c) A humble and faithful heart to remain true to the Lord and His word.
