"Her light was like a most precious stone"

Text: Revelation 21:11

ANCIENT JERUSALEM

Jerusalem was chosen by David to be his capital. It was also chosen by the Lord where the Temple would be located. But because of sinful activities, the Temple at Jerusalem was destroyed in 586 BC. The Temple was rebuilt and continued to be improved upon for many years. It became a most beautiful Temple in the days of the Lord Jesus Christ. But again, the wickedness of the religious authorities caused the Temple to be destroyed in AD 70 by the Romans. Jerusalem has not been rebuilt till today!

THE NEW HOLY CITY

The Apostle John was shown the Bride of the Lamb by an angel. He then went on to show John the new Jerusalem. It would now be built by the hands of men. God would personally see to the rebuilding of the holy city.

“And he carried me away in the Spirit
to a great and high mountain,
and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem,
descending out of heaven from God,
having the glory of God.
Her light was like a most precious stone,
like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.”
Revelation 21:10-11

1. Carried in the Spirit.

a) John was brought to a great and high mountain.

b) He was then shown:

i) The great city.

ii) The holy Jerusalem.

2. What was the difference between this New Jerusalem and the old one?

a) The New Jerusalem would descend from heaven to earth.

b) It would be literally “made in heaven”.

c) This is the essential and huge difference concerning the New Jerusalem.

d) God would create the New Jerusalem afresh.

e) It would excel the two famous Temples that had been built by Solomon and Herod the Great.

3. The glory of God.

a) The holy city radiated with the glory of God.

b) The light of its glory was compared to a most precious stone.

c) It was like a jasper stone.

d) It was as clear as crystal.
