Day 62 – Psalm 97

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.” Psalm 97:2b

THE THRONE OF GOD

The majesty of a King is often associated with his throne. What was God’s throne like?

“Clouds and darkness surround Him;
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
A fire goes before Him,
And burns up His enemies round about.”
Psalm 97:2-3

1. The foundation of God’s throne

a) “Righteousness”
i) This stems from the Being of God.
ii) His righteousness will be the dominant feature displayed.
b) “Justice”
i) From righteousness will come true justice.
ii) Justice will characterize the way God rules.

2. The Majesty of the throne of God

a) “Clouds and darkness surround Him”
i) Clouds are often used to represent the glory of the heavens.
ii) Darkness is associated with storm clouds; these depict the power of God.
All nature is at His command, including the power of storms.
b) “A fire goes before Him”
i) Fire is feared because of its sheer power.
ii) Fire is used as another symbol to describe God’s awesome power.
c) “And burns up His enemies round about”
i) There will always be people who are “enemies” of God; they rebel against Him.
ii) The fire of God will consume those who rise up and rage against Him. (Psalm 2 describes the many nations who rise up against God vainly.)
