Day 18 – Psalm 91

“A thousand may fall at your side…” Psalm 91:7a

KEPT BY THE LORD

War is a terrible thing to experience. Almost anything can happen. No one knows who would be killed. How wonderfully comforting is this text!

“A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.”
Psalm 91:7-8

1. Ravages of war

a) A thousand may fall on the left hand.
b) Ten thousand may fall on the right hand.
c) Thousands can be killed!

2. “But it shall not come near you”

a) Obviously Divine protection is necessary.
b) This special protection is accorded to those who have learned to dwell in the shadow of the Almighty.
i) God’s protection of Israel at the crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 14-15).
ii) God’s protection of His people when the Amalekites attacked (Exodus 17:8-16).

3. “The reward of the wicked”

a) The wicked are the ones who plan the destruction of the innocent and the helpless.
b) They will come with great armies of tens of thousands.
c) They will suffer great defeat at the hands of God.
i) Destruction of the Assyrians (Isaiah 36-37)
ii) Destruction of the Babylonians (prophecy) (Isaiah 14:3-11)
d) Those who keep close to the Lord would witness the power of God bringing destruction to the wicked!
