“He shall cover you with His feathers…” Psalm 91:4a

ASSURING IMAGERY

The psalmist employed very striking imagery in the following text to boost confidence in the Lord.

“He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.”
Psalm 91:4

1. “He shall cover you with His feathers”

a) An analogy of a caring parent bird.
b) God will similarly protect His children.

2. “And under His wings you shall take refuge”

a) This is the part of the believer.
b) He must come to the Lord for protection.
c) God offers perfect protection to all who come to Him for refuge.

3. “His truth”

a) This is a reference to the word of God.
b) His word is indeed “truth”.
c) The believer must exercise faith in the promises of God.

4. “Your shield”

a) The word “shield” is easily understood.
b) The shield offers significant protection.

5. “And buckler”

a) This word is translated “shield” in Psalm 3:3.
b) The buckler is a smaller shield.
c) It is of great significance in close combat.
d) God’s truth offers complete protection (shield and buckler).
