Day 8 – Psalm 90

“The days of our lives are seventy years…” Psalm 90:10a

AN AVERAGE LIFE SPAN

What is an average life-span? Moses was very accurate when he described the average life-span in the following text.

“The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labour and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.”
Psalm 90:10

1. “Seventy years”

a) This is a good “rough estimate” of a life span.
b) This text has become like a yardstick to measure the span of human life.

2. “And if by reason of strength they are eighty years”

a) By reason of “good longevity genes”.
b) By reason of maintenance of health.
i) Good and healthy food
ii) Sufficient exercise and rest

3. “Yet their boast is only labour and sorrow”

a) Life almost inevitably involves labour.
i) One has to work to support life.
ii) One has to work to find a greater meaning in life.
b) Life always offers its share of sorrow.
i) Hardship
ii) Health problems
iii) Death

4. “For it is soon cut off, and we fly away”

Death is a grim and ultimate reality that is hard to comprehend and accept. All too soon eighty years of life are expended, and life ends. Death cuts off even the strongest and the happiest people!
