Day 327 – Psalm 89

“The north and the south, You have created them…” Psalm 89:12a

FOCUS ON THE LAND OF ISRAEL

Ethan the Ezrahite dwelt on God’s might manifested in His creation of the heavens. He exulted in God’s power seen in His control of raging storms. He gloried in God defeating wicked enemies. The focus was now shifted to God’s work in the land of ancient Israel.

“The north and the south, You have created them;
Tabor and Hermon rejoice in Your name.”
Psalm 89:12

1. “The north and the south”

This is a veiled reference to the ancient land of Israel.

a) This could be a reference to the two kingdoms (Israel and Judah).
b) It could simply be a reference to the physical terrain (Genesis 13:14).
c) North and south is just a poetic phrase; it includes the east and the west as well.

2. “You have created them”

a) God has full sovereign right over the land.
b) It was His right to give the land to whoever He chose.
c) He gave the land to Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 13:14-15; 15:18-21).

3. Tabor

a) Tabor was a mountain in the region of Galilee.
b) It was placed strategically between the north and the south.

4. Hermon

a) It was in the northernmost part of Israel.
b) It was the highest mountain in this range of mountain.

5. These were “sacred mountains”

a) Mountains were significant symbols of might and strength.
b) Both these significant mountains were created by God.
c) These mountains were personified in this text; they rejoiced (sang) in the Lord!
