“I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever…” Psalm 89:1a

SUPERSCRIPTION

A contemplation of Ethan the Ezrahite.

This describes a meditative Psalm.

2. Ezrahite

a) Heman was described as an Ezrahite (Superscription of Psalm 88).
b) Ethan was also called an Ezrahite (Superscription of Psalm 89).

3. Both Heman and Ethan belonged to a group of skillful Levites who sang for the Lord (1 Chronicles 6:31-48).

SINGING FOR THE LORD

Ethan began his Psalm with a wonderful cry of commitment to serve the Lord in singing.

“I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever;
With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness
to all generations.”

1. “I will sing”

a) Ethan sang professionally as a Levitical Singer.
b) He must have believed in his ministry of singing in order to sustain it effectively.

2. Two main subjects mentioned

a) The mercies of the Lord.
b) The faithfulness of God.

3. “With my mouth will I make known”

a) This is another way of describing “singing”.
b) The medium of singing was Ethan’s forte.

4. The audience

Ethan was conscious that the next generation needed to be taught about God’s mercies and His faithfulness. Knowledge of God would bless Israel forever. Generation after generation would be blessed if they put their trust in God. Ethan would seek to do his part faithfully.
