“They came around me all day long like water…” Psalm 88:17a

GREAT SUFFERING

The psalmist Heman must have suffered much in his life. Psalm 88 was a contemplation of the many things he had to endure in life.

“They came around me all day long like water;
They engulfed me altogether.”
Psalm 88:17

1. Imagery of flood waters

a) Wave after wave seemed to have raged against the psalmist.
b) These waves threatened to take away his life.
c) Waves engulfed:-
i) Actual enemies
ii) Troubled thoughts
iii) Terror of the wrath of God

2. The psalmist Heman was not alone in his trials of life

a) David had to endure much in his life.
i) He was hounded by King Saul.
ii) His own son rose up against him.
iii) Enemies sought after his life.
b) Jeremiah had to endure much too.
i) He was resisted by false prophets.
ii) He was imprisoned.
iii) He was framed.

3. Great truths about suffering

a) Our faith becomes purified through suffering (1 Peter 1:6-8).
b) We mature significantly through suffering (James 1:2-7).
