Day 305 – Psalm 88

“You have put away my acquaintances far from me…” Psalm 88:8a

FAMILIARITY WITH THE SCRIPTURES

Heman showed great familiarity with the Scriptures. He now borrowed the language of David in the following text (Psalm 31:11):-

“You have put away my acquaintances far from me;
You have made me an abomination to them;
I am shut up, and I cannot get out.”
Psalm 88:8

1. “You have put away my acquaintances far from me”

a) “Acquaintances”
i) This represents the social aspect of life.
ii) The Levites would have many such acquaintances.
iii) These friends could be fellow colleagues.
iv) They could be worshippers.
b) “Far from me”
i) Heman felt all alone.
ii) Perhaps the extreme set of circumstances caused many to flee from him (since he was among those who were marked for death).

2. “You have made me an abomination to them”

a) People would be understandably afraid of associating with those who were marked for death.
b) They would be afraid that they too would die.
c) Hence there would be studied avoidance.
d) Heman felt that he was an abomination to them.

3. “I am shut up, and I cannot get out”

a) Heman felt utterly trapped.
b) He saw no way out.
c) If God did not deliver him through divine intervention he was as good as dead.
