Day 286 – Psalm 86

“Show me a sign for good…” Psalm 86:17a

A NEED FOR ASSURANCE

David’s faith in God was genuine, but the circumstances in his life caused him to ask for assurance from the Lord. This need is understandable.

“Show me a sign for good,
That those who hate me may see it and be ashamed,
Because You, LORD, have helped me and comforted me.”
Psalm 86:17

1. “A sign for good”

a) David was asking for a visible indicator from God.
b) He called it “a sign for good”.
i) This sign was not just for himself.
ii) This sign from God would be so obvious that even his enemies would understand it.

2. “That those who hate me may see it and be ashamed”

a) Those who hated David.
i) The proud
ii) The violent
b) May see it and be ashamed.
i) They will see God’s obvious favour given to David.
ii) They will see that God had indeed blessed David.
iii) They will see that David was indeed His chosen servant.
iv) They would then be ashamed of themselves for having evil intentions to kill David.

3. “Because You, LORD, have helped me and comforted me”

a) God’s help would be a good sign.
b) God’s comfort would be another good sign.
c) God’s abundant mercy bestowed on David would be a very clear sign of Divine favour.
