Day 275 – Psalm 86

“Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer…” Psalm 86:6a

IT IS SO EASY TO TAKE GOD FOR GRANTED

Many of us are probably guilty of taking God for granted. There is a twin-danger. We abuse the knowledge of the goodness of God. Since God is ready to forgive and He is abundant in mercy, we tend to be careless about the way we relate to Him in prayer.

EXERCISING APPROPRIATE REGARD

David was most careful in the way he approached God in prayer. He did not dare to take God and His abundant mercy for granted. This is seen in the way he offered his prayers to the Lord.

“Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer;
And attend to the voice of my supplications.”
Psalm 86:6

1. Addressing God as “LORD”

a) This would be appropriate.
b) For God was indeed the Sovereign LORD.

2. “Prayer… supplications”

a) A prayer was simply a petition.
b) Supplications have the following characteristics:-
i) Deep humility
ii) Earnestness
iii) Strength
iv) Focus

3. “Give ear… attend to the voice of my supplications”

a) God does not have to give ear.
b) He does not have to attend to our supplications.
c) Who are we but humble servants in God’s grand scheme of things.
d) David knew that all of the above applied to him and hence he prayed most humbly.
e) If there is true understanding of who God is, then it should affect the way we pray to Him.
