Day 273 – Psalm 86

“Rejoice the soul of Your servant…” Psalm 86:4a

LOSING JOY IN LIFE

Children tend to be happy in life. But as they grow older, they tend to lose their joy. With the passing of time, joyous moments are few and far in between.

Many things can rob people of joy. Tough circumstances of life can take away joy. Being a king did not automatically bring joy to the heart. But being a joyless king would only result in reigning poorly.

FINDING JOY AGAIN

David knew the importance of finding joy in his soul. He knew that God was the Source of real joy. Hence it was right and wise to turn to God in prayer.

“Rejoice the soul of Your servant,
For to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.”
Psalm 86:4

1. “Your servant”

a) David may be the king of Israel.
b) But he knew that he was but a servant of the Lord.
c) He had learned the lesson of servanthood well (2 Samuel 7).

2. “Rejoice the soul of Your servant”

a) It was God who took him from his lowly position in life as an unknown shepherd.
b) It was God who anointed him king over Israel.
c) The task of being a servant-king was hard and joy-sapping.
d) David pleaded with God to restore soul-joy.

3. “For to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul”

a) David was very conscious of who God was when he uttered this prayer.
i) It was to plead for mercy.
ii) It was also to plead for soul-joy.
b) God must know the place of joy in the soul of a person.
i) It would be a terrible thing to have a soul that has lost joy.
ii) It would be of great significance to find soul-joy once again.
