Day 259 – Psalm 85

“And cause Your anger toward us to cease.” Psalm 85:3b

SALVATION AND RESTORATION

The sons of Korah had become skilled in their understanding of God’s dealings with the children of Israel. They had seen the wrath of God displayed many times. With each experience they grew in wisdom.

“Restore us, O God of our salvation,
And cause Your anger toward us to cease.”
Psalm 85:4

1. Salvation given to Israel

Many prayers must have been offered to God for deliverance from captivity. In God’s time, He delivered Israel from the Babylonian captivity. God had determined that Israel would go into captivity for 70 years and then deliverance (Jeremiah 25:11-12).

a) Six deeds were graciously performed (Psalm 85:1-3).
b) They were deeply appreciated.
c) However, they represented salvation and not restoration.

2. “Restore us”

What did the sons of Korah have in mind when they prayed for restoration?

a) God’s anger was brought up once again.
b) A further distinction may be noted:-
i) There was the idea of God’s anger.
ii) There was the fierceness of God’s anger.
iii) There was now the plea for God’s anger to cease altogether.

A PRAYER FOR FULL RESTORATION

The prayer of the sons of Korah was for “full restoration”. What were these intercessors of the children of Israel praying for?

1. Total cessation of God’s anger.

2. Total restoration would take time but it must be prayed for.

a) The children of Israel returned to Israel in batches.
b) They came back to a land that had suffered the terrible aftermath of war.
c) The return to the former glory of Israel was in the heart and mind of the sons of Korah.
