A CHALLENGING COMMANDMENT

Did God know that it would be challenging to fulfill His commandment to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to appear before Him? Did the pilgrims know that the journey to Jerusalem would be fraught with difficulties? The answer lies in the following text:-

“They go from strength to strength;
Each one appears before God in Zion.”
Psalm 84:7

1. Why did God require a pilgrimage?

The following reasons may be offered:-

a) To encourage His people to put their faith into practice.
b) To forge a great sense of national unity.
c) To build great strength in the hearts of the faithful pilgrims.

2. Why did the pilgrims undertake the difficult journey?

The following reasons may be considered:-

a) Because of their desire to obey God’s commandment.
b) Because of their faith in God.
c) Because of their love for God’s house.
d) Because they believed the Lord would help them along the way.
e) Because they were strong in their spirit.

3. What did they find as they went on to fulfill their pilgrimage?

a) They found strength.
b) They turned hardship and tears into strength.
c) They found that God gave them new strength for each day.
d) They exchanged yesterday’s strength for fresh strength with each new day.

4. Each one appears before God in Zion

Great would be the joy that each one would experience as he appeared before God in Zion (Jerusalem). Each individual would have his own special reason to make the pilgrimage. The successful endeavour affords a special blessing that only he who has been on a pilgrimage can experience.
