“They form a confederacy against You.” Psalm 83:5b

A HISTORICAL CONTEXT

What was Asaph’s actual concern? The following text gives us an indication of the enemies that had allied themselves to form a confederacy against Israel.

“For they have consulted together with one consent;
They form a confederacy against You:
They tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
Moab and the Hagrites;
Gebal, Ammon and Amalek;
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
Assyria also has joined with them;
They have helped the children of Lot.”
Psalm 83:5-8

1. A confederacy

a) There was consultation.
b) There was “one consent”.
c) A confederacy was formed.

2. Aim of this confederacy

a) It was formed to oppose the God of Israel.
b) It was formed to annihilate Israel.

3. Enemies of Israel

a) Some may be considered “traditional enemies”.
b) These enemies had been a thorn in the flesh of Israel from the time of Moses.
i) The children of Lot (Ammon and Moab).
ii) Some known ones (Edom, Philistia).
iii) A few new names were introduced (Hagrites and Gebal).
c) A powerful enemy from afar.
i) Assyria was specifically named.
ii) This was an enemy far way in the north.
