Day 213 – Psalm 81

“He would have fed them also with the finest of wheat…” Psalm 81:16a

THE BLESSINGS OF GOD

God had given great and profound promises to Abraham concerning His descendants. In the Abrahamic covenant God had promised two categories of blessings:-

1. The spiritual and eternal blessings.

2. The physical and material blessings (Genesis 12-22).

THE PREROGATIVE OF GOD

It was the prerogative of God to bestow or withhold His blessings. The outpouring of God’s blessings was contingent upon the exercise of faith by His people. If the children of Israel had genuinely turned to God in faith and in love, they would have experienced the following blessings.

“He would have fed them also with the finest of wheat;
And with honey from the rock I would have satisfied you.”
Psalm 81:16

1. “He would have fed them also with the finest of wheat”

a) There is an inexplicable switch to the third person “He”.
b) However, theologically, there is no change of subject.
c) God is seen as the Person who would have blessed them greatly.
d) The finest of wheat.
i) Physical blessings are in mind here.
ii) The best of physical blessings are to be noted.
iii) Israel, at this point of time, was so far away from God that the ability to appreciate spiritual and eternal blessings is doubtful.

2. “And with honey from the rock I would have satisfied you”

a) God drew water from a rock to quench the thirst of Israel (Exodus 17:1-7).
b) It was no mean feat to draw water to quench the thirst of two million people.
c) If God could draw water from a rock, He could also cause honey to be drawn from the rock.
d) God’s provision of the very best would be assured if only His people would listen to Him and walk in His ways (Psalm 81:13).
