“This He established in Joseph as a testimony…” Psalm 81:5a

DIVINE INSTRUCTION

Asaph may have been a teacher of Israel, but the authority behind the religious laws of the nation was God Himself.

“This He established in Joseph as a testimony,
When He went throughout the land of Egypt,
Where I heard a language I did not understand.”
Psalm 81:5

1. “This He established in Joseph as a testimony”

a) This is a reference to God Himself.
b) “Joseph” was another way of speaking about “Israel”.
i) It was God who established Joseph in Egypt.
ii) It is God Himself who established this law.
iii) Each New Moon Worship would be a living testimony of God’s reality and His relationship with Israel.

2. “When He went throughout the land of Egypt”

a) This was a reference to the work that God did through Moses.
b) God was personally involved in all the details of freeing Israel from bondage to Egypt.

3. “Where I heard a language I did not understand”

a) This is a difficult phrase.
b) Who is this “I”?

4. A possibility considered

a) Asaph transports himself to the time when God went throughout the land of Egypt.
b) He grasped the difficulty of the work that God had to do.
c) He could not understand the language of the Egyptians.
d) The task of delivering the children of Israel was enormously challenging.
e) It was only right that Israel remembered its deliverance from Egypt with a solemn feast.
