Day 181 – Psalm 80

“Come and save us!” Psalm 80:2c

HEART-FELT PRAYERS

Asaph was a Levite and thus was well-schooled in spiritual exercises like prayer. And pray he did. His prayer was directly affected by his knowledge of God.

“Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel,
You who lead Joseph like a flock;
You who dwell between the cherubim, shine forth!
Before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh,
Stir up Your strength,
And come and save us!”
Psalm 80:1-2

FOUR PLEAS BROUGHT

1. “Give ear”

a) God must first hear.
b) This plea was sent up to God as Shepherd of Israel (Psalm 79:13).

2. “Shine forth”

a) The favour of God is often in mind when the word “shine” is used.
b) This plea was for God to grant favour to His people.

3. “Stir up Your strength”

a) Strength from God was also needed.
b) This was a plea to God to lend His strength to Israel.

4. “Come and save us”

a) Deliverance (salvation) was needed.
b) In the light of Asaph’s other psalms (e.g. Psalm 79), enemies threatened Israel’s survival.

A VARIETY OF NAMES

Asaph employed different names to describe Israel.

1. Israel- as a nation (Psalm 80:1a).

2. Joseph was used to symbolize Israel (Psalm 80:1b).

3. Ephraim, Benjamin, Manasseh… Some of the tribes were mentioned, but Israel is in mind.
