Day 172 – Psalm 79

“Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You…” Psalm 79:6a

GOD’S WRATH AGAINST WICKED NATIONS

Asaph knew all about the wrath of God against wicked nations. The history of Israel recorded the acts of Divine wrath against the enemies of God.

1. Egypt felt the wrath of God (Exodus 1-14)

2. Sihon and Og were powerful nations destroyed by the Lord (Deuteronomy 2:30-37; 3:1-6).

3. The Canaanite nations that were conquered by Joshua (Joshua 12:7-24).

PRAYING AGAINST WICKED NATIONS

Asaph prayed that God would deal with the wicked nations.

“Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You,
And on the kingdoms that do not call on Your name.”
Psalm 79:6

1. The Outpouring of God’s wrath

a) If God was going to pour out His wrath against Judah, would He also not pour out His wrath against wicked nations?
b) There is no mistaking an imprecatory element in this prayer.

2. “The nations that do not know You”

a) These nations had known about the God of Israel (e.g. Egypt).
b) The phrase “do not know You”:-
i) These nations did not respect God.
ii) They had no regard for the children of Israel.
iii) They paid scant regard for the sanctity of human life.

3. “The kingdoms that do not call on Your name”

a) These nations had some knowledge of God and His ways.
b) However they had chosen not to believe in Him nor had they worshipped Him.
c) Instead they had chosen the path of wickedness and destruction.

Would God not judge these nations for their wickedness?
