“The wrath of God came against them…” Psalm 78:31a

THE WRATH OF GOD

Why was God angry with the children of Israel in this instance?

“They were not deprived of their craving;
But while their food was still in their mouths,
The wrath of God came against them,
And slew the stoutest of them,
And struck down the choice men of Israel.”
Psalm 78:30-31

1. They were not deprived of their craving

a) God graciously provided.
b) He even brought them countless quails.

2. What would be considered a normal response?

a) Should there not be a time of special thanksgiving?
b) Should there not be grateful worship?

3. What transpired?

a) Pure greed was displayed.
b) They were eating as if God would not provide in similar fashion again.
c) The one who gathered the least killed more quails than he could ever consume.
d) What about the greedy ones? How many quails did they kill?

4. What do these actions mean?

a) Rank unbelief
b) Sheer carnality

5. God’s anger

a) Many were slain… through overeating?
b) God had in fact sent a great plague on the wicked and greedy children of Israel.
c) This was carefully noted by Moses (Numbers 11:33).
