Day 124 – Psalm 78

“…Opened the doors of heaven.” Psalm 78:23b

AN APPRECIATION OF GOD’S PROVISION

Asaph did not personally experience what the children of Israel did when God provided for them so miraculously in the Wilderness Journey. His appreciation of their unique experience was expressed in this text.

“Yet He had commanded the clouds above,
And opened the doors of heaven,
Had rained down manna on them to eat,
And given them of the bread of heaven.
Men ate angels’ food;

He sent them food to the full.”
Psalm 78:23-25

1. “Yet He had commanded the clouds above”

a) God continued to provide for the children of Israel despite their ingratitude and unbelief.
b) This is intimated by the word “Yet”.

2. “He had commanded the clouds above, and opened the doors of heaven”

a) The God of Israel had Divine authority.
b) He had power over the clouds above.
c) The word “clouds” was used as a symbol for the “doors of heaven”.
d) There should have been dark clouds of anger hiding Divine favour from heaven.
e) But these dark clouds were parted and instead the doors of heaven were opened.

3. “Had rained down manna on them to eat”

a) It was used as a figure of speech.
b) “Manna” simply meant “What is this?”
c) The children of Israel had never seen manna before.
d) They discovered it as a very special kind of food.

4. “Men ate angels’ food; He sent them food to the full”

a) Do angels need to eat?
b) If they ate at all, “Manna” would be that special divine food.

God specially provided for the children of Israel every single day for forty years!
