Day 87 – Psalm 77

“Will the Lord cast off forever?” Psalm 77:7a

HARD QUESTIONS

Asaph set for himself six hard questions. This was his idea of “meditation” and “diligent searching”. These six questions had to be thought over carefully. The first question was stated in this text.

“Will the Lord cast off forever?”
Psalm 77:7a

1. Fears surfaced

a) This was perhaps one of the deepest fears felt.
b) It was a fear felt:-
i) By the nation.
ii) By Asaph personally.

2. Fear of being cast off by the Lord

a) This fear was not unfounded.
b) Asaph knew the laws of Moses only too well.
c) In the Mosaic law there were many promises of God’s blessings (Deuteronomy 28).
d) In the same law there were also warnings of curses that would befall the nation if it sinned against God wantonly (Deuteronomy 28).

3. The sins of Israel

a) Israel had committed so many sins against God. it would not be surprising if the nation ended up being cast off forever.
b) Many prophets had already been sent to warn the nation, but their words had been rejected.
c) If God were to cast off a sinful nation, He would not be blameworthy!

4. Had God cast off His people

a) This was the question that brought much distress to Asaph.
b) This concern was certainly part of his “trouble”.
c) However there were no easy answers forthcoming!
