Day 69 – Psalm 76

“With the remainder of wrath…” Psalm 76:10b

TWO TYPES OF WRATH

Two types of wrath were described by the psalmist Asaph in the following text:-

“Surely the wrath of man shall praise You;
With the remainder of wrath You shall gird Yourself.”
Psalm 76:10

1. The wrath of man

2. The wrath of God

UNDERSTANDING THE WRATH OF GOD

Asaph defended the doctrine of the wrath of God. The Lord has every right to be angry with sinful and unrepentant mankind.

1. “The remainder of wrath”

a) This is to be read in the context of man’s wrath.
b) God’s wrath is described as “the remainder”.
i) Whereas man is often consumed by his own wrath.
ii) God is not consumed by His wrath.
iii) God’s wrath is always under His control.
iv) It is always balanced and measured in its release.

2. “You shall gird Yourselfâ??

a) The girding of self is a reference to getting ready to do something.
i) A man girds himself to go out to work.
ii) A soldier girds himself to go into battle.
b) God girds Himself with wrath.
i) To battle wickedness.
ii) To bring about deliverance for the oppressed.
iii) His wrath will always be an expression of Divine justice against unrighteousness.
