Day 64 – Psalm 76

“At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob…” Psalm 76:6a

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO DEFEAT A POWERFUL ENEMY?

The psalmist Asaph was right when he turned to God in prayer and pleaded for Divine deliverance. The answer to the problems they face as a nation was not to look for human allies. Judah had at that time turned to Egypt for help. Both nations were defeated by Babylon! What does it take to defeat a mighty empire like Babylon?

“At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob,
Both the chariot and horse were cast into a dead sleep.”
Psalm 76:6

MILITARY MIGHT

1. Military might of the ancient world

a) Soldiers (infantry)
b) Cavalry (chariot and horse)

2. The Babylonian army

a) They had a huge army.
b) They had innumerable chariots and horses.

3. Judah’s army

a) It was pitifully small in comparison.
b) It could not stand up against the might of the Babylonians.

WHAT JUDAH NEEDED

Judah needed the Lord. He was the Lord of hosts and His Personal involvement would be sufficient to defeat the mightiest army.

1. “At Your rebuke, O God of Jacob”

a) All God needed to do was to speak a word.
b) And if He were to make it a word of rebuke against the enemy- that would be sufficient.

2. “Both the chariot and horse were cast into a dead sleep”

a) God could do that literally.
b) Effectively, it simply means that the might of Babylon was totally immobilized!
