EXTOLLING OF GOD

It is natural to extol Someone as great and wonderful as the LORD God of Israel. As Asaph caught a prophetic glimpse of how God would indeed rise up for His people, for the cause of justice, he found himself breaking forth into high praise.

“You are more glorious and excellent
Than the mountains of prey.”
Psalm 76:4

1. “The mountains of prey”

a) This is a description of the enemy.
b) The enemy was formidable.
c) Its might was described as a mountain.
d) A mountain of prey- this may be seen as an extension of the phrase “a bird of prey”.
e) The enemy was a powerful and intimidating predator.

2. “You are more glorious and excellent”

a) God is compared to the enemy here.
b) He is pronounced “more glorious”.
i) His glory is second to none.
ii) Divine glory eclipses any human glory.
c) He is proclaimed (more) excellent.
i) How may mere mortals compare with God?
ii) How may the might of man compare with the power of God?

HOW GOD WILL DEAL WITH THE BABYLONIANS IN THE DAY OF THE LORD

Let us ponder these awesome words of Isaiah the prophet concerning how God would deal with the Babylonians.

“I will punish the world for its evil,
And the wicked for their iniquity;
I will halt the arrogance of the proud,
And will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.”
Isaiah 13:11
