Day 43 – Psalm 74

“You broke open the fountain and the flood…” Psalm 74:15a

MEDITATING UPON GOD AS CREATOR

The psalmist went on to think further about God’s creative acts.

“You broke open the fountain and the flood;
You dried up mighty rivers.”
Psalm 74:15

1. “You broke open the fountain and the flood”

a) This verb “broke” was used with creative purpose.
b) God broke the heads of the sea serpents.
c) Now He broke open the fountain and the flood.
i) This may be a reference to the hard ground that seems unyielding.
ii) But God’s power overcame the land’s reluctance to yield its fountains.
iii) It was nothing to God to create fountains.
iv) In His strength He can cause a flood to come forth!
d) Where there was no water in sight, there were now fountains and floods.

2. “You dried up mighty rivers”

a) The psalmist then went on to think about “opposites”.
b) There were the mighty rivers in existence.
c) Could God dry up mighty rivers?
d) Without a doubt, God could dry up mighty rivers.

THE POINT OF THIS MEDITATION

What was the point of this meditation? Let us consider the following thoughts:-

1. These thoughts brought much hope and encouragement to the heart of the psalmist.

2. He needed to reinforce his belief that God was strong and powerful though enemies had destroyed the temple.

3. He bolstered his faith in God by dwelling on the might and power of God seen in creation.
