“The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.” Psalm 72:20
AN IMPORTANT POSTSCRIPT
The Psalm of Solomon correctly ended with his “Amen and Amen” (Psalm 72:19). The following text is best understood as an important postscript.
“The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.”
Psalm 72:20
1. “David the son of Jesse”
a) The main contributor to the Book of Psalms was David.
b) In time, it was convenient to think of the psalms in association with David.
c) This does not discount the significance of other contributors.
i) Asaph Psalm 50
ii) Solomon Psalm 72
iii) Anonymous psalmists Psalms 67, 71
d) Psalm 72:20 marks the end of the second Book of Psalms (Psalms 42-72).
2. Prayers
a) The psalms were essentially prayers offered to God.
b) The prayers offered included:-
i) Penitential prayers Psalm 32, 51
ii) Petitions (for deliverance) Psalms 59, 60
iii) Praise Psalm 45
3. Use of the Psalms
a) For personal meditation in the holy exercise of cultivating trust in God.
b) For public reading in worship to bless the name of the Lord God.
“Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only does wondrous things!
And blessed be His glorious name forever!
And let the whole earth be filled with His glory.
Amen and Amen.”
