“He will redeem their life from oppression and violence…” Psalm 72:14a

THE CONCEPT OF REDEMPTION

The doctrine of redemption is well-illustrated in the following text.

“He will redeem their life from oppression and violence;
And precious shall be their blood in His sight.”
Psalm 72:14

1. The plight faced by the poor and needy

a) They are under oppression.

i) From enemies.

ii) From wicked oppressors who know no mercy.

b) They suffer violence.

i) This is a reference to actual physical violence.

ii) The wicked do not spare because they feel no pity for their victims.

2. He will redeem their life

a) He will deliver the poor and the needy (Psalm 72:12).

b) He will spare them (Psalm 72:13a).

c) He will save their souls (Psalm 72:13b).

d) He will redeem their life.

i) Rescue them from their violent oppressors.

ii) Remove them from grave danger.

3. Precious shall be their blood in His sight

a) The reason why the Messiah-King would do this is tenderly declared.

b) The blood of the poor and needy will not be despised as worthless.

c) The blood of the poor and needy are most precious to the Messiah-King,
revealing the beautiful and compassionate heart of the Lord.
