“Revive me again…” Psalm 71:20b

TRUSTING GOD AMIDST STRUGGLES IN LIFE

There are many struggles in life. Not everyone is able to understand, let alone trust God in the trials of life. The psalmist shows us how we may keep our faith in God amidst struggles in life.

“You, who have shown me great and severe troubles,
Shall revive me again, and bring me up again from the depths
of the earth.”
Psalm 71:20

1. “You”

a) God’s involvement in the struggles of life is acknowledged.
b) This was no passive acceptance either!

2. “You, who have shown me great and severe troubles”

a) God did not prevent great and severe troubles to arise.
b) The Lord had allowed the “great and severe troubles” to come.
c) It was within the prerogative of God to have even planned for these struggles to take place.

3. “Shall revive me again”

a) There was such a deep trust in God amidst life’s struggles.
b) God may be trusted amidst the struggles of life.
c) The afflicted and suffering may look forward to being revived.

4. “And bring me up again from the depths of the earth”

a) The language employed suggests a possible death scenario.
b) The psalmist may well have been in danger for his life (depths of the earth).
c) Nevertheless there was that essential trust in God amidst struggles.
d) Trust in God, when well developed, will stand the individual in good stead.
