Day 321 – Psalm 71

“Deliver me in Your righteousness…” Psalm 71:2a

A DEEP CONCERN

Why was the author so concerned about not being ashamed? The following text gives us a clue as to why he wrote what he did.

“Deliver me in Your righteousness, and cause me to escape;
Incline Your ear to me, and save me.”
Psalm 71:2

1. Facing tough circumstances

a) There is a strong hint that the author was facing tough circumstances in life.
b) He pleaded for two things from God:-
i) Deliverance
ii) Escape

2. “Deliver me in Your righteousness”

a) There was a deep understanding of God expressed.
b) The psalmist appealed correctly.
c) He pleaded God’s righteousness.
i) He did not plead personal righteousness.
ii) Instead he pleaded God’s righteousness.
iii) This kind of appeal is often with reference to God’s justice against the wicked.

3. “Incline Your ear to me”

a) A similar phrase was used by the palmist David.

“Bow down Your ear to me…”
Psalm 31:2a

b) This is a plea for God to lend His ear to an urgent cry for help.

4. “And save me”

This was the bottom line. There was a great need for God’s help. Only Divine help can save the author from his predicament.
