“In You, O LORD, I put my trust…” Psalm 71:1a

TRUST IN GOD

The theme of “Trust in God” is a major one in the Book of Psalms. The focus of Psalm 71 is on the subject of trusting in the Lord.

THE QUESTION OF AUTHORSHIP

The authorship of Psalm 71 is unknown. There are a number of psalms whose authors are not determined. Two reasons may be offered as to why the author’s name was not furnished:-

1. Preference to remain anonymous.

2. Superscription was lost in the transmission of texts.

THE INCLUSION OF A PSALM

The Book of Psalms is a collection of individual psalms. How does an individual psalm get included in this great collection?

1. By Authorship

a) Psalms written by David.

b) Psalms written by well-known people.

i) Asaph

ii) Sons of Korah

iii) Solomon

2. Where the author is unnamed or unknown

a) The contents are carefully examined.

b) The contents must contain the following, at the least:-

i) Truth that is in keeping with the Scriptures.

ii) Truth that is relevant and valid.

iii) Truth that is highly instructive.

iv) Truth that inspires readers.
