Day 287 – Psalm 68

“The LORD gave the word…” Psalm 68:11a

THE WORD OF THE LORD

Another significant thought that David gave attention to was “the word of the Lord”. This comes through very strongly in the following text.

“The LORD gave the word;
Great was the company of those who proclaimed it:
‘Kings of armies flee, they flee,
And she who remains at home divides the spoil.'”
Psalm 68:11-12

1. “The LORD gave the word”

a) This is a general reference to the words He gave to Israel through Moses.
b) In context, these words would be with reference to the wars that Israel had to fight against powerful enemies. Two may be highlighted:-
i) The word God gave to Moses concerning the armies of Egypt (Exodus 14-15).
ii) The word God gave concerning the battle against Amalek (Exodus 17:8-16).

2. “Great was the company of those who proclaimed it”

a) Some scholars noted that the word “company” is feminine (gender).
b) Thus this reference was possibly a reference to the womenfolk who proclaimed with joy the victory God gave to Israel when He defeated the mighty Egyptian army (Exodus 15:20-21).
i) Miriam was named.
ii) She led all the women folk to sing and dance with joy proclaiming God’s word given to Israel.

3. “Kings of armies flee, they flee”

These were all the enemies of Israel before the power of God and His word.

4. “And she who remains at home divides the spoil”

The women folk did not need to fear for their menfolk who fought for their nation. God was marching before them. He would lead them to victory. They would await the return of their victorious soldiers, and happily divide the spoils of war.
