“Sing to God, sing praises to His name…” Psalm 68:4a

EXPRESSIONS OF JOY

Joy is certainly a matter of the heart and it is also very personal. However, when it comes to joy of faith, then it must be given appropriate expression.

“Sing to God, sing praises to His name;
Extol Him who rides on the clouds,
By His name YAH, and rejoice before Him.”
Psalm 68:4

1. “Sing to God”

a) There are different types of songs:-
i) National songs
ii) Folks songs
b) There are also religious songs
And these are to be correctly understood as “singing to God”.

2. “Sing praises to His name”

a) The content of joyful religious songs should be characterised by praise.
b) God’s name deserves to be given great praise.

3. “Extol Him who rides on the clouds”

a) The word “extol” matches the idea of “rejoicing exceedingly”.
b) God’s lofty majesty is well captured in the phrase, “who rides on the clouds”.

4. “By His name YAH, and rejoice before Him”

a) This word stands for the tetragrammaton (YHWH).
b) This was the name that God gave to Moses (Exodus 6:2-3).
c) Israel would know Him as YHWH (or YAH… an abbreviation).
d) This word is usually translated LORD (KJV, NKJV).
e) A genuine faith in God would lead to great rejoicing.
